A lot of people around ask for mockups before they can award the project. This often happens on Freelance bidding websites. Beware of such demands. 2 years back I have experienced the bitter side of these mockups. They will lure you with a potential project that you can work on IF you can give them a beautiful mockup. They don’t want a draft. They want a mockup, which roughly translates into giving them placeholders, gradient bars and a design that they can work themselves on.

If a person really wants to see how you work, he/she should ask for your portfolio, your previous works and max to max a simple draft. If someone is asking for mockup and you really want to do it then always ask for some advance payment. Never give a mockup without it. They might be waiting for you to work your ass off, tell you that they didn’t liked the design and then use your design. This often happens when someone wants a mockup without telling you their domain name. This is because they don’t want you to find out that they used your design for some domain of their own. So beware of mockups and save up your precious time.
