I was recently looking at a freelance job board. A lot of freelancers had posted their response over there. Out of curiosity, I just checked out their profile and was surprised to see how many freelancers have a “Company website”. I thought people would have stopped doing this mistake now since I started. Yes, I too did the same mistake. I thought of venturing out as a company rather than a freelancer.

When you start out as a freelancer, be a freelancer. Don’t portray yourself as a company. The word “freelancer” involves a personal human touch in its meaning. You cannot be a company and a freelancer. You are either a company or a freelancer. Moreover companies don’t come bid on freelance boards. If they are, then be assured that they are freelancers and nothing more. People who run companies have everything in place and know that freelance boards are not the place to get projects. I did the same mistake 2 years back when I started. I partnered with some friends and launched a company. It was a mistake. Today we both are having our own websites and are being what we actually are.

So don’t rush into portraying yourself as a company. People will appreciate you more if you are a freelancer and claim to be one. Another secret is that on freelance board those people post project who are looking for freelancers to work on them and not companies. Companies has added costs while freelancers just charge their rates per hour. Good luck!
