You must have heard this a lot of times – Be innovative, do something new, do something different. It is quite easy to say these phrases but are equally hard to follow. And one of the biggest reasons why it is so hard is because we don’t believe in ourselves. We don’t believe in our ideas and the thought of “what the world will think about it?” always haunts us.
Some few years back I was working on a personal web design project and that’s when I came across people (friends & acquaintances) who told me that this design won’t work. On asking why, there was a very simple answer – “It doesn’t happen this way”. It is the simple fear in our mind that stops us from going out of the way and innovate things. The fear that exists in our mind just because we are not courageous enough to believe in our ideas.
I have a very simple rule in my life, this rule existed from the very beginning and I have now formalized it as my mantra – People See What You Show Them. This is, to some extent, a part of the web usability but extends way beyond the principles into the world of innovation. Some 15 years back if you told someone that I am going to make a website with just a search bar on it, most people would have laughed on you thinking you have been on weed. Someone took the initiative, someone looked beyond what people thought & said, someone believed in their idea, someone had the courage to be Innovative. Today we call it Google. 5 years back no one could have thought that there will be a site where people can type just 140 characters in a text box and post all day long. Now, it is one of the fastest business growing every – Twitter.
Your ideas should be in sync with objective but at the same time don’t be bound by the existing notions. Remember that the innovators are the ones who go ahead and create something that people have never seen. Remember you have the power to decide what you want to show. Remember you have the power to change people’s perspective. Remember you have the power to change how people look at things. Remember you have the power to change how people use things. Remember you have the power to innovate. If you don’t go ahead and use that power, you will never be able to innovate. We all have this power, we all want to be different, we all want to be innovative, yet we forget that to BE different we have to DO different.
