When I was starting up my own venture one question often popped in my mind was how will I retain my people. Lots of people questioned me. Why would someone come to work with me instead of a big company? Why someone will want to hang out with my startup business while they can earn good money in MNCs? How am I going to retain people?

Well I thought about it a lot and here are some pointers that I concluded:

1.) People like to work in an environment where they have freedom and responsibilities. It is very important to give people freedom with responsibilities. Make them feel special and a special part of the company. Make them feel it is their own company. People are foresighted and if they believe you are hard working and have a vision, they will stick with you. People want satisfaction.

2.) The above point now comes to the point of getting the right people. Get people who are passionate about their work. Find people who enjoy their work. Find people who don’t work for money but rather believe that they deserve money for the work they do. Find people who are innovative and proactive. Trust me such people are likely to stick with you for long.

3.) In any case there will always be a company better than yours, paying better than yours. So don’t worry about people leaving your company. Just concentrate on the time they spend with you. Make use of their skills and add value to their life. If you are adding a meaning to their life, their skills, their growth then they will love you. Some of the best companies started with a couple of people who kept adding value to every employee joining them.

Lastly, don’t be afraid that people will leave you. Take care of your people and utilize their time. If they are really good ones they will stick with you and know what exactly they have to do.
